Location: Kusubecho, Ise City

This monument commemorates the planting of roadside trees along Miyuki Road funded by MIKIMOTO Kokichi. Miyuki Road was constructed in 1910 as a national road to connect Geku (Outer Shrine) and Naiku (Inner Shrine) via Mount Kuratayama in anticipation of the Emperor’s visit to Ise Jingu. At that time, cherry, maple and camphor trees were planted with his donation of about 6,000 yen, which is equivalent to approximately 9 million yen today.

MIKIMOTO Kokichi (1858–1954) was a businessman born in Osato, Toba, Toshi County, Shima Province (now 2 Toba, Toba City). Through trial and error, he succeeded in pearl cultivation and earned the nickname “Pearl King” for his achievement. As in the case of Miyuki Road, Mikimoto Road, another road between Geku and Naiku, has a connection with him, too: it was named after him. The details are engraved on the monument built to commemorate the history of Mikimoto Road, which is located at the former Toyomiyazaki Bunko Library.
