Great Camphor Tree of Matsushita-sha
Designated as a Natural Monument of Mie Prefecture
Date of designation: December 10, 1937
Location: Matsushita-sha, Futamicho-Matsushita, Ise City
This is an ancient camphor tree located within the grounds of the Shinto shrine Matsushita-sha.
Although the trunk of the tree has already decayed, leaving a height of about 5 m above the ground and its lower part is now hollowed out, some branches are extending outward from its base. As a result, the tree boasts an impressive appearance with a height of 20.5 m, a trunk circumference of 7.1 m at breast height, and a branch spread of 20.8 m east to west and 14.5 m north to south.
According to local legend, the tree is said to be 1,800 years old. The majestic presence of the shrine is fit for the ethereal and legendary forest (Somin-no-Mori) where it is located, further adding to its solemn grandeur.
