Keyaki Tree on the Sengen-tsutsumi Levee (Designated as a Municipal Natural Monument)
Location: 2 Nakajima, Ise City
The keyaki (Japanese zelkova) is a tall deciduous tree belonging to the family Ulmaceae that spreads across mountainous regions from Honshu to Kyushu of Japan. Its trunk stands upright and its branches extend outward in a fan-like shape.
It has grayish-brown bark and ovate alternate leaves (3 to 7 cm in length) with pointed tips and serrated edges. In spring, it produces small pale yellow-green flowers at the same time as new green leaves emerge.
The keyaki tree on the Sengen-tsutsumi Levee has a circumference of 5.8 m at breast height and a height of 28 m, and is one of the largest keyaki trees in Ise City. It is comparable in size to other notable keyaki trees designated as prefectural natural monuments, such as the “keyaki tree of Shinpuku-in Temple” in Misugicho, Tsu City (with a circumference of 6.5 m at breast height and a height of 35 m) and the “keyaki tree of Kunitsu Shrine” in Misugicho, Tsu City (with a circumference of 7.9 m at breast height and a height of 28 m).
